Welcome to the sewing strands!
I am the modest sewist, the main writer behind the sewing strands.
I started this space as I am starting my journey into sewing my own custom-fit modest-cut designs.
Both my mum and grandmother are amazing sewist.
I have pictures of me donning a long sleeved dresses made by my mum for me and my sister.
In the 90s there were no modest dresses for kids, so my mum crafted beautiful dresses for me and my sister.
I remembered my late grandmother (Allah yarhamha!) used to own this beautiful old Singer treadle machine that has a nice redish-brown wooden table attached to it.(similiar to the picture on the left)
Unfortunately, it was given away.
I did not have the love for sewing until recently, my heart sank as I could not inherit the beautiful treadle sewing machine from my grandmother.
So, I decided to thrift the best singer embroidery machine which was the old singer treadle machine to learn how to do free motion embroidery and fell in love with the machine.
After years of suffering from eczema and still recovering from it, my search for cure has led me to gravitate towards natural fabrics.
That is when I begin to appreciate cotton and linen more,I used to think that cotton is hot and linen is very scratchy!
Now, they are my go to fabrics!
If you have the same love for cotton and linen and choose modest loose- cut apparels, I hope you’ll join me as I share my creations with you!
Love and Salaam,
May peace be upon you,
The Modest Sewist
